Key Takeaways

  • Clarity in your message is the single highest-ROI investment you can make in marketing
  • Your business needs operational structure before scaling marketing spend
  • How you treat people—customers and team—is the ultimate competitive advantage
  • The best salespeople teach and challenge, not just build relationships
  • Timeless wisdom outperforms trendy tactics every single time

I get asked all the time what books I recommend. So here they are. These are the seven books that have shaped how I think about business, sales, marketing, and leadership. If you're running a company and you haven't read these, start here.

1. Velocity: Less Chaos. More Profit. Real Growth.

Shameless plug—but I wrote this book because I kept having the same conversation with founders over and over. They were working eighty hours a week, stuck at a revenue ceiling, and had no idea why.

Velocity lays out the framework I use with every client at Good Agency. Three pillars. Heart is your culture and your people. Heading is installing a revenue operations system where sales and marketing actually work together. Hustle is protecting your profit and executing in disciplined ninety-day sprints without burning out your team.

If your business feels chaotic and you can't figure out why you're not growing, this is where I'd start.

2. Building a StoryBrand 2.0: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen

This book changed my life—and I don't say that lightly. When I applied the StoryBrand framework to my own business, we doubled our incoming qualified leads. Since then we've easily three to four x'd our revenue.

The idea is simple. Your customer is the hero of the story, not you. Most businesses talk about themselves all day long and wonder why nobody is listening. Don shows you exactly how to flip that and make your message so clear that people actually pay attention.

We are a StoryBrand Certified Agency and this framework is baked into everything we do. If you only read one marketing book in your life, make it this one.

3. Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business

You can have the best marketing in the world and it won't matter if your business is a mess on the inside. Traction introduces the Entrepreneurial Operating System and it gives you a way to actually run your company with clarity, accountability, and rhythm.

We run on EOS at Good Agency and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. It forces you to get clear on your vision, put the right people in the right seats, and solve problems instead of talking about them for six months.

If your team is busy but nothing is getting done, read this book.

4. Unreasonable Hospitality: The Remarkable Power of Giving People More Than They Expect

Will Guidara took Eleven Madison Park from a struggling restaurant to the number one restaurant in the world—and the secret wasn't the food. It was how they made people feel.

This book wrecked me in the best way. At Good Agency our first core value is Hospitable. That didn't come out of thin air. It came from reading this book and realizing that the way you treat people is the ultimate competitive advantage.

This applies to sales and marketing more than you think. When a prospect gets on a call with you and feels genuinely cared for instead of sold to, everything changes. Your close rate goes up. Your referrals go up. Your retention goes up. Because people remember how you made them feel long after they forget what you said.

5. EntreLeadership: 20 Years of Practical Business Wisdom from the Trenches

Dave Ramsey built a company doing over two hundred million a year and he did it with no debt, no outside investors, and a whole lot of common sense. This book is about leading your team, managing your money, and running your business like an adult.

It's not flashy. It's not trendy. It's just true. I come back to this one whenever I need to be reminded that the fundamentals are the fundamentals for a reason.

You can't scale what you can't manage. And you can't build a great marketing system on top of a business that doesn't have its financial house in order.

6. The Challenger Sale: Taking Control of the Customer Conversation

Most people think the best salespeople are the ones who build relationships. This book proves that's not actually true. The best salespeople are the ones who challenge their customers to think differently. They lead with insight. They teach. They push back when needed.

This changed how we approach sales at Good Agency. We don't show up and ask "what keeps you up at night." We show up and tell you what should be keeping you up at night based on what we see in your business.

That's a completely different posture—and it earns trust faster than any relationship-building tactic ever will.

7. Proverbs

Not a business book. The business book.

I read Proverbs every month. There are thirty-one chapters, so one a day lines up with the calendar. It covers wisdom, discipline, integrity, how you treat people, how you handle money, how you lead, and how you make decisions.

Every principle I've built my businesses on traces back to something in this book. If you want to build something that lasts and something that matters, start your mornings here. Everything else on this list is commentary.
